UNIVERSIDAD DEL PACIFICO-ESCUELA DE NEGOCIOS, ECUADOR PREPARES THEIR STUDENTS FOR THE MODERN CHANGING WORLD An education that includes a cultural understanding and sensitivity to the environment is one that will enable future students to obtain the right set of values to become moral and upright future businesspeople. At the Universidad del Pacifico-Escuela de Negocios, Ecuador, students learn what's important to succeed.
The Universidad Del Pacífico is a undergraduate and graduate business school specializing in Business Administration, Economics, Science, Technology and Environmental Administration. Their system of instruction is based on the Harvard Real Case Methodology, which combines theory analysis and practice. Having full accreditation, they are able to offer transferable credits to your home university. While attending the Americas Workshop 2001 in Miami, Florida USA in March, ICC's president, Tasha Lewis, had the opportunity to get a glimpse of what her clients would be exposed to in her meeting with Mr. Johnny Gonzalez, Dean of International Programs at Universidad del Pacifico-Escuela de Negocios, Ecuador (UDPE). ICC: "What is your role at Universidad del Pacifico-Escuela de Negocios, Ecuador? How long have you been at the school? (any other background information that you wish to provide)." UDPE: " I am the Dean of International Programs. I am in charge of all the international relations, study abroad programs, and international students coming to Ecuador, in the four sites, Cuenca, Quito and Guayaquil, and the Galapagos islands. I have worked for Universidad Del Pacífico for 10 months, but I have been working in International Programs for almost 15 years. I am not alone in my department. We have a team of 10 professionals in the area of international programs. Ever since I was able to spend one year as an exchange American Field Service student in Virginia, USA, I realized the importance and the beauty of spending studying time abroad." ICC: "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend Universidad del Pacifico-Escuela de Negocios, Ecuador? What makes Universidad del Pacifico-Escuela de Negocios, Ecuador unique?" UDPE: " We believe that we provide a true international atmosphere for our students. They have access to faculty and students from many different countries. Therefore 75 % of classes are taught in English. We provide the flexibility of small groups (10 to 15 students), and constant updating on the information, study cases, training programs, for the students to be prepared for the modern changing world. We form our students as entrepreneurs. We offer the opportunity for our students to create a Business, to provide working opportunities for them and for others. In our international student
programs we offer hands on experiences through internships in the areas
where Ecuador is most successful within the global content:
UDPE: " Our main stream of programs is in the Area of Business and Economics. Our strongest orientation will be to help our students become good managers of projects in the areas that are in highest demand for the Latin American scope. For local Students we offer: International Business, Agri Business, International management, Marketing, Finance, Economics, and Management of Science and Technology. For International Students, in addition to the above mentioned areas, we offer : Ecology and Environmental Studies, Resource Management in the Galapagos Islands, Doing Business in Latin America, Spanish as a Second Language, and Art and Culture of Latin America. These programs are of high demand in Ecuador since it is a young economy that is just growing into the international atmosphere. We allow our students to perform internships in those areas, and to prepare group projects that will allow them to get in touch with the real world. In addition we will help our students to create a new company so that they will go through the process from the very beginning to the final financial, legal, and logistic details. Many of them become managers of their own company before graduating or are able to sell such companies to local investors." ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?" UDPE: "We are basically concerned of the student's academic performance and ability to adapt to changes and challenges. We ask for recommendations for our applicants in order to make sure they will perform well in their internships. We are going to form them as entrepreneurs, therefore we need to make sure they have the will and courage to become one. In relation to language, they could be at basic level in Spanish. The type of tasks the participant will do in the internships will however depend on the proficiency level in the Spanish Language. We recommend however to have taken at least two semesters of Spanish in order to have access to more complex internships. We have no limitations in age, sex, religion, sexual preference, or ethnic background." ICC: "What type of student do you accept? What qualities do you look for or consider when deciding to accept a student?" UDPE: "We look for very responsible, mature, focussed students. The ones who are determined to reach their goals. We demand from them a lot. We ask them to extend to the top of their capabilities. Therefore we make sure all of the accepted students are willing to reach their very best." ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology." UDPE: "We have a very liberal system of teaching. We allow plenty of discussion in class. We use Studies of Cases that are related to international companies and governments. We combine those discussions and problem solving with lectures and workshops." ICC: "Do you offer financial aid, scholarships, or assistantships to help defray the costs of tuition, room and board? academic scholarships? dance scholarships? If so, what is the eligibility criteria?" UDPE:
"We have a department in each campus that analyses the case of the student
at close detail. If we discover a student with high potential we
will go out of our way to help him/her to complete the study program.
We have programs to make loans up to 50 % of tuition, and special benefits
for outstanding

Home hospitality with a University family is always a unique and enriching experience for both the family and the student. When we hear the Gold Coast,
we think of beaches and high quality. It is a clean pollution free
environment with beautiful beaches that offers a wonderful ambiance for
learning. At the Australian International College of Language,
future students can master the English language and spend their extra time
exploring the wilds of the Gold Coast.
Mrs. Jan Keppie, founder of Australian International College of Language (AICOL), met with Ms. Tasha Lewis, President of International Connections Consulting (ICC), at the Americas Workshop 2001 in Miami, Florida, USA and discussed the benefits of studying at her school. ICC: " What is your role at The Australian International College of Language (AICOL),? How long have you been at the school? (any other background information that you wish to provide)." AICOL: "I am a co-founder of AICOL with my husband Garth. We own and operate the school." ICC: " What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend The Australian International College of Language? What makes The Australian International College of Language unique?" AICOL: "The
Australian International College of Language (AICOL), is the foremost
English language college on the Gold Coast. There is no single compelling
reason for students to study at AICOL, rather there is an accumulation
of reasons which together comprise a compelling argument for students to
ICC: "Explain some of the programs that you offer? How does this enhance the learning experience for your students? What types of courses do you offer?" AICOL: "AICOL's
policy is to remain true to its core business, which is the teaching of
English. Of course we provide the standard courses for students intending
to enter university or other tertiary institution, or local high school
and primary schools. These include English for Academic Preparation,
ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? Language proficiency?" AICOL: "We receive students as young as 6, and our oldest student has been 76, so there is no age barrier. Language proficiency is also no barrier. Each student is assessed upon their entry through undergoing a comprehensive test, and placed according to their ability. The school whole is tested every six weeks, and students proceed to the next level or otherwise as the case may be." ICC: "What type of student do you accept? What qualities do you look for or consider when deciding to accept a student?" AICOL: "We will
not accept a student who is not interested in studying, as they disrupt
the other students in the class. We would prefer to advise them to
go to another college. Apart from this, we are prepared to accept
any student who is prepared to study English. The best students are

ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology." AICOL: "Our teaching methods are focused on developing the four aspects of learning English, being reading, listening, reading and writing. These are taught through theory and class lessons through outside activities, attention to individual student needs through one-on-one tutoring during independent study sessions, and overall an emphasis on active person-to-person communication, rather than an over-emphasis on computer-aided learning." ICC: "Do you offer financial aid, scholarships, or assistanceships to help defray the costs of tuition, room and board? academic scholarships? dance scholarships? If so, what is the eligibility criteria?" AICOL: "We do
not offer any scholarships or assistance. Our school fees are already
very competitive as we own our college premises and therefore do not pay
rent, so our overheads are low. There is also considerable
demand for places at our college, so we do not need to offer incentives
to recruit
ICC: "We would like to thank Ms. Jan Keppie for the interview." Buckswood is a truly International Summer School with locations that offer a choice of some of the most beautiful campuses in south east England- both of which are exclusive private boarding schools. Buckswood Summer School is completely residential, providing children with a safe, supervised environment during their stay in England. Parents always have the reassurance of knowing that the same standards and quality apply, whichever Buckswood Centre is selected. They have designed the weekly programme with the idea that youngsters are happiest when they're busy, preferably doing the things they like! So, each day that they're with us, they have plenty of things to do. During the mornings they attend class to learn, improve and practice their English and, because they're with young people from other countries, they have to use English to communicate. Afternoons and evenings offer a programme of activities, games and trips which appeal to kids of all ages and tastes. It's all part of the Buckswood odyssey - discovering new friends, new places, new challenges, new things to do and, perhaps, something new about themselves. Mr. Michael Reiser, founder of Buckswood ARC Summer Programs (BASP), shared information and ideas about his programs with ICC President, Tasha Lewis, during the Americas Workshop 2001 in Miami, Florida USA. ICC: "What is your role at Buckswood ARC Summer Programmes?" BASP:
"I founded Buckswood ARC Summer Programmes back in 1978. Since then
I have remained closely involved in the Management of the company and in
providing the overall guidance and direction for it. Detailed management
of the operations during the summer is in the hands of an Operations Manager,
ICC: "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to participate in your programs at Buckswood ARC Summer Programmes?" BASP:
"Parents: Peace of mind; quality of the programme Children: Making new
international friends, happy summers with lots to do, being at Centres
which they really like. Our Centres are based at really attractive campuses,
all well-known boarding schools in England and the United States; they
provide a comfortable and secure environment within which youngsters can
learn and enjoy themselves."
ICC: "What makes Buckswood ARC Summer Programmes unique?" BASP: "We offer two distinct programmes: the Classic ESL programme: this provides 16 hours of ESL tuition each week, along with a very full activity/recreation programme. The activity programme includes fun activities, socials, discos, sports, off-campus attractions (e.g. Ice skating, 10 pin bowling, stock-car racing etc), plus two all-day trips each week to places of interest - e.g. London/Washington. The Enrichment Program is based at Christ's Hospital - a delightful Centre in England, and is designed for American and other English mother tongue youngsters. It provides an alternative to the English language course held during the mornings - a choice between participating in the Performing Arts Workshop or a Sports coaching programme (Soccer, Tennis, Golf or Horse riding.) Participants in this Program combine with participants in the Classic ESL Programme for the activity/recreational part of the day." ICC: "Explain some of the programs that you offer?" BASP: "There are no entry requirements for admission to our Classic ESL Programme within the age range we offer, 7-16. We take all levels of English ability from complete beginners to advanced. However, we do impose restrictions on the percentage of children admitted speaking any one language in order to provide a truly multinational community on a first come first served basis. For the Enrichment Program, (designed for the American youngsters) the age range is 11-17 and students must be fluent English speakers." ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance?" BASP: "We want students who are looking to benefit from being within a cosmopolitan environment, who want to mix and contribute to the overall atmosphere." ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology." BASP: "In teaching English as a Second Language we employ the direct method i.e. we use English to teach multinational classes with an average size of 12. We use a combination of textbooks and our own material, and direct some lesson time so that it relates to specific activities that students will be doing. Students are tested on arrival and at the end of each week." ICC: "Do you offer financial aid, scholarships, or assistanceships to help defray the costs of internships, room and board? academic scholarships? dance scholarships? If so, what is the eligibility criteria?" BASP: "We occasionally offer scholarships in association with an agent as part of a major promotion. Otherwise we do not offer financial assistance." ICC: "We would like to thank Mr. Micheal Reiser for the interview." International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Mr. Michael Reiser, founder of Buckswood ARC Summer Programs for providing all of the information for the article and for meeting with her at the Americas Workshop 2001 in Miami, Florida USA. traditional language schools, cultural exchange programs and educational
tours.
Education is emerging as one of the worlds largest growth industries and EF is at the forefront. Through all of their programs whether they are taking children abroad for the first time, teaching business English around the corner from your office, or sharing the world with students online their goals remain the same: to offer quality learning experiences to people all over the world. There are in total eight levels ranging from Beginner to Advanced giving the students a wide range of learning possibilities. We also offer courses for adults and executive who want to be surrounded by professionals. These courses can also be tailored made to fit each persons individual needs." ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?" TM: "Students need to have a minimum of 16 years of age and some form of language exposure to be a prime candidate for an EF program." ICC: "What type of student do you accept? TM: "We accept students that show a commitment to learning and taking full advantage of the material presented in the EF course. We also pay close attention to the immigration status of the student, as well as maintaining good standards of education in the home country." ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology." TM: "EF has harnessed an innovative and practical teaching methodology infusing classical classroom training with modern aid of computers, and internet classes to further reiterate lessons taught. Along with these methods EF prides itself on providing various lecture series to our students as well as discussion forums in efforts to continue bolstering further development of the desired language and vocabulary in participants." WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORDS FASHION, JEWELRY AND VISUAL DESIGN, YOU THINK ABOUT ISTITUTO EUROPEO DI DESIGN IN ITALY/SPAIN
Design. When you hear the word design, numerous images come to mind-glamour, models, makeup, photography, tropical locations, furniture, graphic and many others. In today's constantly changing climate in the world of design, the industry is growing tremendously giving interested students a wide variety of opportunities for career choices. At Istituto Europeo Di Design (IED), they give their students what they need to succeed in this diverse industry. The Istituto Europeo Di Design (IED) has schools in Milan, Rome, Turin and Madrid and has been providing training courses and carrying out research in the design, fashion, visual communication fields for over thirty five years. The Istituto Europeo DI Design was founded in 1966 and organises three-year, refresher and permanent training programmes as an alternative to university education, in the fashion, design and visual communication fields at its schools in Milan, Rome, Turin and Madrid. Ever since it was founded in 1966, IED has developed innovative and diversified teaching methods: technological innovations and teaching experiments, expressiveness of messages and integrated communication, market problems and new professional figures. It's aim is in fact to give young design, fashion and communication professionals the tools they need to meet the requirements of the production world effectively: a project and communication ethos which stays with them throughout their whole career. Every year about 500 foreign students attend the courses (the most significant places of origin are: East Asia, Central-South America and Europe). During its existence, IED has trained students from 52 countries. The prestigious universities and international design schools which, like IED, belong to academic bodies and associations, such as CUMULUS (Design Educational Network co-funded under the Erasmus section of the Socrates Program), ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts) and IAA (International Advertising Association), form an important network of partners with which the group has set up cultural and teaching exchange programmes. While attending the Americas Workshop 2001 in Miami, Florida, International Connections Consulting's (ICC) President, Tasha Lewis, had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Mauro Cavagnaro , International Affairs Director of IED Group. ICC: "What is your role at Istituto Europeo Di Design ? How long have you been at the school? (any other background information that you wish to provide)." IED: "I am the International Affairs Director of the whole IED Group (which is composed of various schools in four cities). For the moment I have a staff of 4 persons (owing to the growing of the Group I think that they will soon be more): one area manager for Asia, one area manager for Latin America, one Information Service Assistant, one Administrative Assistant. I have chosen to deal directly with the other markets (Europe, Mediterranean and North America) since l also like to do the work of the area manager. I have been working with IED for 6 months. Before I have always worked as international marketing manager in governmental (state) organizations and Chamber of Commerce. For a period I also worked as a private consultant but I prefer to work in structured organizations." ICC: "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend Istituto Europeo Design? What makes Istituto Europeo Di Design unique? IED: "A link between knowledge and know-how is the essential basis from which the fundamental aim of the training can be reached: the ability of designers to create innovative products according to the actual state of technology, output structures and the market. IED's teaching method is based on a balance between scientific knowledge and practical ability. IED's partner-relationships with high level companies is fundamental for the group's educational strategy, not only in order to put on the events which mark the end of the academic year, but also in order to plan the whole teaching process for its courses. Thanks to the constant active relationships which IED has with the economic and business worlds, every year about 100 companies take part in different ways in the training of IED Group students. All teachers are active freelance professionals, and all courses take place with the support of, and in direct contact with, companies from the sectors concerned. In line with its international vocation, IED schools take in students from different nations and cultures." ICC: "Explain some of the programs that you offer? How does this enhance the learning experience for your students? What types of courses do you offer?" IED: "THREE YEAR COURSES: The three year courses represent the core educational activity of Istituto Europeo Di Design: the oldest and the most known and appreciated. Three Year courses are taught in Italian in Italy and Spanish in Spain. Types of Three Year Courses: 1) Industrial Design: in Milan and MadridCourses begin September 1st 2001. Students can come to Italy and begin from the first day to study Fashion or Interior Design in English language. For those who are interested in continuing studies in Italy there is the possibility of Admission (after the end of the One Year course in English) to the second year of the three-year-courses in Italian (students have in full immersion in the Milan atmosphere of fashion and design, they may also have already done some studies in the sector (but not necessarily), and don't want to learn Italian just for this one year study. One Year Courses begin January 21st 2002. Admission closes on November 15th 2001." ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?" IED:

of the language of tuition. IED requests an intermediate knowledge (for

Everyone needs resource information to facilitate their studies or work. Quality resource information is an invaluable tool. International Connections Consulting (ICC) has spent the last 13 months researching and investigating various types of resource information that would appeal to their wide variety of clients (business people, organizations, students, teachers or vacationers). ICC's
Self Service Resource Directory provides a wide variety of information
to the world regarding cultural information, education, funding, scholarships,
and specialized programs, etc. This service allows their clients to obtain
additional information to further assist them with their education programs,
vacations, business opportunities, and teaching material, etc. One positive
aspect about the directory is the exactness of the material. ICC tries
to be as specific as possible with the listings. This is extremely
important when someone is in a hurry and doesn't have a lot of time to
do guesswork regarding which sections serve their needs. ICC tries
to limit its categories to those that serve their clients needs.
The company recognizes the value of time. In today's fast paced
society, time is a luxury that many of us don't have. Therefore,
it is critical to get the information that we need when we need it in a
efficient, fast, and timely manner. The ICC Self Service Resource
Directory fulfills this need. More

BLS (Bordeaux Language Studies)
enables foreigners to discover the French culture through its language.
The school was conceived in Bordeaux in 1993 by Damien Renaux. At
the age of 30, Damien had an awesome amount of travel experiences throughout
the United States and abroad, and had the idea to start a school to teach
foreign students all aspects of French culture and language. Now in its
fifth year, the school is expanding at such a rapid pace that they have
had approximately 2,000 students already.
BLS prides itself on its innovative method for teaching French. They offer approximately 20 themes per level: grammar, contemporary civilization, classical literature, contemporary literature, communication techniques, the history of Bordeaux, advertising, the theatre, and French savoir-vivre' (study of different life styles). Although these are the courses offered, a student has the option of organizing personalized lessons that support their individual needs and interests. For example, In 1997, for a Swedish Cardiologist, BLS organized French medical vocabulary tuition plus accompanied visits to hospitals and laboratories as well as meetings with fellow French doctors. Also, private lessons are offered for students who have highly ambitious linguistic objectives. Moving away from the somewhat traditional language instruction methodology, BLS offers linguistic workshops to enhance the diverse teaching and learning styles. The main goal of these workshops is to encourage verbal expression in French and to give [the students] a taste for the language. Contrary to the usual language classes offered in most traditional schooling environments, BLS teaches students to speak and to hear the language first, and then grammar and syntax are approached. BLS prepares candidates for the DELF (Diplome d'Etudes en Langue Francaise) or DALF (Diplome Approfondi de Langue Francaise) exams, set by the Ministere de l'Education Nationale. BLS has had a 98% pass rate with students taking these exams. Also, students can be prepared for the Certificat Pratique de Francais Commercial de la Chambre de Comerce de Paris. BLS has had a 100% pass result. With all that BLS offers, and the small class size of four to eight students, BLS is definitely accomplishing their objective: to teach its students to communicate in everyday situations. In addition to French language
teaching , BLS offers a variety of courses that inevitably immerse the
students in some of the well-known aspects of French culture. By
taking French Gastronomy, a two-hour cheese-tasting session organized by
Jean d'Alos, a prominent cheese maker in Bordeaux, students learn about
the wonders and distinctions of cheese. Of course, this class wouldn't
be complete without a wine course. The World of Wine is a course
offered to enable students to discover and appreciate the cultural richness
and superb efforts behind wine-making. The students are taken on
visits to wine cellars where they learn about vine maintenance, vinification
methods, etc. These lessons are taught by the chateau owners.
For a more in-depth course, students may enroll in The Bordeaux Wine
Course and the Art of Wine tasting. The course lasts for six days (40 hours
a week) and is comprised of lectures, wine-tasting sessions, visits to
some very well-known chateaus, meetings with cellar-masters, buffet
dinners, and of course a test at the end of the course. Students who successfully
complete the course are presented with a Connoisseur's Certificate. In
addition to cheese and wine courses, students can choose other classes
like regional cookery, floral decoration and display. I imagine these classes
are a lot of fun because they allow students to learn about some
of the aspects that make up French culture, and thus the students truly
begin to feel apart of the culture.
For the younger sports-loving student (between the ages of 13 and 17) BLS offers the International Summer Programme in Biarritz. In 1997, the program's first year, close to fifty young people from around the world were enrolled. The students in this program take morning French lessons four days a week. The whole of Wednesday in addition to one afternoon a week, are set aside for excursions, museum visits, hill-walking in the Pyrenees, rafting in the Basque County, a visit to the natural reserve of wild horses, visits to village towns such as St. Jean de Luz, and St. Jean Pied de Port'. The main goal of this program is to create a structured language and cultural program for the adolescent that makes learning French fun. The program runs from the 5th of July to the 29th of August. BLS has just opened up English Language Schools at the BLS campus in Chicago, Illinois, USA. If you are interested in any of the programs offered at BLS, please contact International Connections Consulting. Mr. Juan Carlos Lacunza,
General Director at Lacunza-International House San Sebastian, provided
International Connections Consulting with the story behind their school.
Lacunza opened back in 1954 when my father decided to open his own language school. In 1978 he joined International House (Ih). This allowed him to hire qualified teachers (Ih is reputed for Teacher Training), and share ideas and experiences with other school directors. As part of the Ih affiliation agreement, we had to teach Spanish to these native teachers. This was the embryo of my school. Being a teacher in the USA and in Spain for several years, introduced me to the rewarding world of education. Having a Degree in Mathematics, I wanted to do something else, so I took a Master inbusiness Administration and this gave me the necessary background to direct the Spanish Department in 1992. In 1995, we decided that the Spanish School, with so many specific services (accommodation, activities, local teachers, marketing abroad, etc.) should operate independently. Since then, the school hasn´t stopped growing because we understand what good service means, what it takes to have a good school, what the needs of our clients are and how complex the word quality is when it comes to teaching so many people from so many countries. THE MOST COMPELLING REASON
FOR ATTENDING LACUNZA - INTERNATIONAL HOUSE SAN
Our students say that they enjoy learning with us and that is our main goal. The school has the charms of a middle size school where you notice the staff like their work. We have a system of teacher training, director of studies and senior teachers to help our teachers be successful in their profession. We are exposed to all new trends in methodology through our involvement in International House and the conferences and exhibits we attend. We have a system of teaching
that makes learning a very enjoyable experience. We emphasize the oral
aspects of the language. To us it is important that students use
the language and make the most of the
Learning a language takes
some time, it is a fact. Nevertheless, when immersed in its culture, the
whole process accelerates. We foster "intercambios", a formula for our
students to get in touch with Spanish
San Sebastian is a very attractive
destination. Few places combine the charms of a seaside resort with a city
full of culture and plenty to do in the evening and in the night. If you
add to this the beauty of the city
Being by the sea, the winter climate is mild and the beaches still provide a field for sports or intimate chats. San Sebastian is the starting point for many excursions: the Pyrennees for ski or trekking, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, or green tourism in refurbished country houses for a weekend. France is just 20 minutes away, (with lovely cities like Biarritz, San Juan de Luz, etc.), Pamplona and Bilbao (with the famous Guggenheim Museum) just 50, and the North coast is beautiful. At Lacunza we have developed our own social program and we really make an effort for the students making the most of their time with us. We organise welcome and farewell parties for students to mix up and get to know each other easily. There is something going on everyday: cultural activities like watching a film, visiting a museum, a guided visit to San Sebastian, popular festivals, or sports like football or volei-ball on the beach, cycling (mountain-bike), playing "pelota-vasca", surfing, wind-surfing or canoeing in the bay, horse riding, dancing, rafting, thermal baths, and anything you can imagine. We are open to organise what you are dying to try! PROGRAMS Our main product is Intensive courses, which can be combined with extra private lessons to improve some particular aspect or accelerate the learning process. Intensive courses can take the shape of a Super-Intensive Mini-Group from July to September, with a maximum of 6 students in a class studying for 6 lessons a day (each lesson is 45 minutes). These are particularly apt for professionals and people who being short of time want to make the most of their time while enjoying a group. Regular Intensive courses are 4 lessons a day (5 in the summer) in a group of maximum 12, with an average of 9. It is the classic formula, very successful among those who are not so pressed to learn fast. A very popular formula is the Long Term Courses. They provide the students with a lifetime experience. In 8 to 26 weeks they get well acquainted with San Sebastian and all aspects of our culture and the way of life in Spain. They end up being able to point out new things in San Sebastian, and with "intercambios" and an open mentality, they will have local friends. We regularly get professional who want to do a full One-to-one course. Sometimes I am amazed with the capacity to work and assimilate some of our "professionals" have, doing 8 or 10 lessons a day and still taking advantage of all those extra hours. Of course, we also have some special programs like the new Basque Language and culture course in which we give a briefing on our ancestral culture and the origins of the Basque language. They even learn a few words and expressions in Basque, useful to link with people, to our ears it is very flattering to notice some interest in this culture we endeavor to preserve. We have two programs for teachers like the Methodology and Culture course for non-native teachers of Spanish, and the Teacher Training course typical in most International House schools. For groups we usually tailor make specific programs according to the number of participants and specific demands. We always include several bonuses, like the activities program to help our students discover what the normal visitor would not find. It is also a way to support bonds between the students. Coming to a school like ours is a perfect way to spend a holiday, if you have to travel alone, you are certain to make friends. We also have a library, lend books to our students (graded reading), and offer free extra tutoring. We run a small test every week to make sure students have grasped the new contents, and an exam a month to make sure they follow the pace of the class. ACCEPTANCE The minimum age for our intensive course is 17 years old. We accept students of all levels and we run a placement test for all new students. Starting dates for total beginners are more restricted (every 4 weeks in winter, every 2 weeks in summer), so we double-check that they start on the right date. A total beginners group starts with the past tenses after 2 weeks, and at that time they can use the present and some simple and useful structures like I want to. I have to. I like. I need. I am going to. and they can exchange simple information, make introductions, give directions, and most useful, go to a bar or a restaurant! What really makes a difference when you come to Lacunza is that you really understand why we are called International House. Our students come from all over the world and getting in touch with so many different cultures can become the most rewarding aspect of studying with us. International Connections

TRINITY SCHOOL in Spain was established in 1984. It is a language academy located in El Puerto de Santa María, a city of a hundred palaces and also the home of Christopher Columbus. A city full of history, yet young enough to have plenty of activities ranging from day time amusement parks, to night long discos. Its beautiful, long, golden sandy beaches on their own guarantee a wonderful time, in fact there are more than 22 km of beaches in El Puerto de Santa Maria. The area is well known by
the Spanish tourists as the only authentic holiday place left, as the rest
of Spain is saturated by sun loving tourists from every corner of Europe,
who do not want to find Spain, but
You will find extremely friendly Spaniards willing to help you in every possible way to make you feel welcome. The staff at TRINITY SCHOOL strive to give students all the support they need in order to fully integrate them into the Spanish life and giving them at the same time an excellent tuition. The teachers are all from the local University of Cadiz and their preparation to teach Spanish as a foreign language is of a very high standard, some also have Masters in this area. Mr. Ian M. Walsh (IW), Director at Trinity School, welcomed the opportunity to give International Connections Consulting (ICC) a wealth of reasons why students choose their school. ICC: " What is your role at Trinity School? " IW: " I am the director. " ICC: " How long have you been at the School? (any other background information that you wish to provide). IW: " I have been with the School since the very beginning. I founded the original Academia de Idiomas Trinity School Ltd in 1984. In the beginning we only taught English and French. Then Trinity School started sending Spanish students to study English in England and Ireland and finally we started our Spanish courses for foreigners. Since then we have expanded and moved to a new building as the old one became too small after just 3 years. I started teaching in Dublin, Ireland before moving to Spain. " ICC: "What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend the Trinity School? What makes Trinity School unique? " IW: " I think that all good language schools do good courses so I cannot say that we are better in this respect. We are as good as the others but what makes us a little special is the area of Spain where we are. This is a typical Spanish coastal town/small city with about 75,000 inhabitants, which is still unknown abroad. This means that in this part of Spain we get very little international tourism. There are always some tourists and foreign students but nothing like Malaga, Madrid, Sevilla or Salamanca where there are thousands of tourists from everywhere. Also being in the South our weather is very beautiful. On average we get 305 days of sunshine per year. It is a lot cooler here than inland in the summer because of the sea (Temp 28 -32ºC), and as the town has 22 Kms of magnificent sandy beaches, so you always can find somewhere to cool off. " ICC: " Explain some of the programs that you offer? How does this enhance the learning experience for your students? What types of courses do you offer? " IW: " Our programs are intensive 3 hours per day or super intensive 4 hours per day. The classes have a lot of emphasis on conversation. Our idea is that it is not good learning to read and write a language if you cannot speak it. An important factor also is that here the majority of the local people do not know English or any other European Language so our students must speak in Spanish all the time. We also take students to visit other towns and cities in the area so they can enjoy the beautiful architecture of this area. " ICC: " What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency? " IW: "Our courses are for 18 years old or over. Each student is given a placement test on his/her first day. We accept students of all levels. Students must first get in contact with us to see if we have places on the course which the students wishes to do and on the dates chosen. " ICC: " What type of student do you accept? What qualities do you look for or consider when deciding to accept a student? " IW:
" We accept all types of students from University students to Businessmen.
We like our students to take their courses seriously and to be punctual
and to participate as much as possible in their classes
ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology. " IW: " This is a secret. But more or less we do all aspects of the language, reading, writing, listening and speaking. We use different methods for different levels but all with the same aim: the student learns the maximum possible in his/her course. " ICC:
" We would like to thank Mr. Ian Walsh for the interview. "
More about the Spanish Language Program It is for adults aged 18 and over. Classes are of a maximum of 6-8 students. The levels of courses range from beginners to advanced. The course books are provided by the school and do not cost you anything extra, and there is an extensive stock of supplementary material for use in the classroom. The programs are 2 to 4 weeks (but can be longer), with 3 or 4 hours of classes every day. The summer courses are held from June to September. In the winter they hold courses for small groups and provide private intensive classes. Commercial Spanish for Companies is taught in groups and private classes. During the lessons you will learn the five different aspects of Spanish:

France is known for many things fine wine, foods, culture and of course its beautiful language, French. Studying French in France can be an excellent opportunity to combine all of the wonderful things this country offers while developing a native flair for the language. At Inlingua Normandy Picardie, you can find what you desire in learning French in country. Rouen is the principal city
of the region of Haute Normandie. It is a thriving commercial centre, yet
one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with a rich historical past.
Whether you enjoy the sights, art, history,
Normandy has many links with the past (William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, Jeanne d'Arc) with art (the impressionists, Monet, Boudin, etc) and literature (Maupassant, Flaubert, Victor Hugo...). It also has a rich regional cuisine thanks to local cream, cheeses (Camemberts, Pont l'Evêque...), fish, Cider and Calvados ! The coastline offers some of the most particular scenery in France - yet the capital Paris is just 50 minutes away by train ; perfect for a busy day out ! Have you ever imagined an industry that churns out over 2 billion dollars a year in record sales? An industry where competition is so fierce that mere talent and determination would not guarantee you a foot in the door? If you have, then you are on your way to understanding the global and multi-faceted entertainment industry. But now, joining the technical
revolution is easier and more fun than ever before, with JMC Academy providing
students with the benefit of over 17 years experience in the music and
entertainment arenas.
The JMC Academy is a fully accredited college with an international reputation in entertainment technology and training, which has put many people on the right track to a prosperous music career. Founded in 1982, and boasting one of the largest computer music labs in the world, JMC Academy is regarded as a leading institution in its field, with its professional standard acoustic studios and digital recording labs ensuring that the Academy keeps its finger on the pulse of the musical revolution. The Academy offers degrees in Engineering Technology, Music and Multimedia, Music Business Management and Television Production and Multimedia as well as certificates in various music fields. To keep its finger on the pulse of the musical revolution, the JMC Academy in association with Macquarie University in Sydney - established the Degree of Music and Media Studies, which aims to provide students with the knowledge and experience necessary to make an impact in the ever evolving music and entertainment industries. The Bachelor of Music and Media Studies is a performance degree with over 800 hours of the 2000 plus hours of face-to-face training dedicated to performance in various areas and disciplines. The course is concerned with furthering musicians' knowledge of live contemporary music performance and production. It aims to do so by developing advanced skills in the holistic creation of music composition and arrangement, leading ultimately to the musicians finding their niche in the highly competitive commercial industry. Although students may not be formally trained at the commencement of the course, the rehearsal time allocated to them ensures that their talent grows by leaps and bounds by the time they graduate. On the strength of JMC Academy's long-standing reputation for churning out professionals with an edge over their competitors, entry into the Music and Media Studies degree has become a hotly contested ticket for hopefuls. Each year, musicians from all over Australia vie for places in the course, hoping it could be their stepping stone to a professional career in the music world. But although many opportunities exist now and in the future for employment in the music and entertainment technology industries, contrary to some beliefs, many jobs will be behind-the-scenes. Because most times it takes more than just talent to establish a career in music business management, the JMC Academy - in association with the University of New England, Armidale - is catering to the push for hands-on behind-the-scenes experience by offering the Degree of Professional Studies. Starting in late October, the Bachelor of Professional Studies is a 3-year degree designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the commercial music industry, specializing in either management or production. Another innovative behind-the-scenes degree offered by JMC Academy is the Bachelor of Engineering Technology, offered jointly with the University of New England and specializing in electronic engineering with a focus on audio design, installation and maintenance. JMC Academy also caters for those whose interest lies firmly in the animation and production fields and away from the music industry by offering the Communications Degree - Animation and Television Production, in association with the University of Western Sydney, Nepean. The Bachelor of Communications is a 3-year production oriented degree that seeks to ease graduates into the dynamic and expanding animation and television industry, and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to obtain employment in a wide range of professions. For those who prefer to attempt
shorter courses, JMC Academy offers 10 months certificates in Audio Engineering
and Sound Production, Music Performance, Digital Production and Multimedia
or Music Business Management. All courses are registered on the Commonwealth
Register of Institutions and
JMC Academy's production and recording facilities are unparalleled. They include one 24-track studios, two digital 16-track music studios, four Yamaha O2R's and the Roland Digital Suite, which includes 15 hard-disk computer workstations for scoring film music. Because a large number of people choose to set up their own studies at home, JMC Academy teaches its students all facets of the music business, from operating their own business to becoming experts at the technical aspects of production and Audio Engineering. Most JMC Academy graduates go straight from a degree or certificate course into a job for which they are trained, ranging from audio engineering to multimedia and music business management. Past graduates have found work in such diverse areas as Fox Studios, various record companies including Warner Chappell Music and Shock Records, and Community radio stations. The commercial networks also benefit from the talents of JMC Academy graduates, with many audio engineers and musicians going straight into jobs with Channels 7, 9 and 10. JMC Academy combines teaching by experienced professionals with an atmosphere where creativity can flourish supported by the most advanced music and entertainment technology. It is the ideal place to start a career in the entertainment and music industries. International Connections Consulting's (ICC) President, Tasha Lewis, had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Martin Cass (MC), Managing Director of JMC Academy, at the Americas Workshop this past February in Miami, Florida. Ms. Lewis was very impressed with the programs that his school offered. She pointed out that several years ago she was involved in the music production business and had the opportunity to work on and appear in a Music Video. Most people, including herself, didn't realize all of the behind the scenes work that goes into the Music Industry. Ms. Lewis felt that a lot of new musical artist should try to take the Music Business Management course before entering into such a competitive field. She knew first hand all of the potential areas of difficulty with her own experiences in the industry as a performer and producer. Additionally, Mr. Cass gave ICC an idea of what types of criteria for evaluating future students and the qualities they look for. ICC: "What is your criteria for evaluating a student for acceptance? Age? language proficiency?" MC: "IELTS 5.5 Academic or 6.0 General/TOEFL 550 are our English Language requirements. If they don't have these, they do our ten week English program-English for Music and Entertainment Professionals." ICC: " What type of student do you accept? What qualities do you look for or consider when deciding to accept a student?" MC: " Commitment, dedication, understanding of the Music industry and how tough it can be. Ambition - where do they want to go. How are they planning to get there? Outgoing, friendly ,active in Music/Ent Tech industry - bands, build websites, already know some engineering - experience." ICC: "Explain your teaching methodology." MC: "Combining academic learning with practical experience. Giving students room to learn for themselves." ICC: "We would like to thank Mr. Cass for the interview." International Connections Consulting's President, Tasha Lewis, would like to thank Mr. Martin Cass, Managing Director of JMC Academy, and Catty Azzi, for supplying the information for the article. Imsol is composed of two schools that are entirely dedicated to teaching
Spanish to foreigners, one in Granada and another in Almuñécar.

Our centers have been open since October 1992, I joined the company a little later at the end of my studies at the University of Granada which allowed me to dedicate myself to the same field. ICC: What in your opinion is the most compelling reason for a student to attend the school? CS: The students desire to learn or perfect a new language in a student atmosphere (Granada) and vacation by the sea (Almuñécar) in a region more renowned to Spain. Andalucía is famous for their parties and pleasant temperature. What makes Imsol unique is the family atmosphere of the school, where all the students and professors know each other, and at the same time they learn the language and enjoy some of the cities magic. ICC: Explain some of the programs that you offer? How does this enhance the learning experience for your students? What types of courses do you offer? CS: The language teachers in IMSOL have superior degrees in Hispanic Philology in addition to their Teacher Training Certificate CAP. the rest of the teachers have degrees in their respective specialities (Commercial Spanish, Literature, etc.). Each student will have at least two teachers during the course. The group of teachers are coordinated by the Director of the Institute. Thanks to this and to our methodology together with a process of total immersion while studying the language in class and using it later in the daily life of the student, purchases, restaurants, conversations with Spaniards, make the progress of the student in learning the language quick and effective. Here are some of the types of courses we offer Intensive: They are courses of general learning of the Spanish language (4,5 or 6 hours/ day). These courses contain a maximum of 5 or of 10 students per class. Cocktails (I need another word for this): Four hours in group and an hour individual. DELE: Courses of preparation for the official exam of the Spanish in their three levels: Initial, Basic, Superior.
